Driving the Future of Work: Examining Key Predictors of Employee Engagement in a Changed Workplace


This article explores the drivers of employee engagement within the context of the evolving ways in which we work. Against the backdrop of significant societal, technological, and organisational shifts, the study investigates how nine key drivers influence employee engagement outcomes. Using various techniques of statistical modelling, our results reveal the nuanced roles these drivers play in shaping engagement at different levels.

The drivers ‘Strategic Alignment’ and ‘Personal Development’ emerge as consistently strong predictors of higher engagement. These findings suggest that engagement is not a monolithic concept but a complex interplay of factors requiring tailored human-centric strategies. The article situates these insights within broader changes to how work is organised and experienced. It discusses the rise of alternative approaches to work, necessitated by widespread social change, and explores the role of employee engagement in facilitating the ideological and practical shifts that challenge traditional assumptions about work.

Conclusion

This study reveals the importance of reimagining employee engagement in a transformed workplace. Through a comprehensive analysis of nine drivers and their relationship with two key measures of engagement – ‘Willingness’ and ‘Commitment’ – our findings indicate critical insights into the factors that shape engagement in a forever-changed world of work.

Our findings indicate that promoting strategic alignment, development, recognition, and enabling work environments is essential for organisations navigating the shifting landscape of work. These drivers align with key trends that characterise the requirements of the future of work, such as distributed teams, an emphasis on skills-based advancement, and the pursuit of work that resonates personally and socially.

Equally important is the recognition that employee engagement is not a monolithic construct. The nuanced differences between drivers’ influence on ‘Willingness’ and ‘Commitment’ demonstrate that engagement strategies must move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach. Tailored, human-centric solutions are essential for addressing the diverse needs and motivations of the modern workforce.

As the future of work continues to evolve, this study highlights the value of leveraging data-driven approaches to engagement.
